Nom Nom…Home made Dog food!

Here is the list of needed items with links, ingredients and step by step recipe for the homemade dog food that is all my babies eat. I will not be listing standard kitchen utensils, only the odd ones. Some will seem out there to you but understand I have been making a weeks worth of dog food for two 70lb dogs that eat twice a day, every Sunday for over a year. I have this honed down to a 4 hour (mostly waiting) super simple process. Note there will be a section with things you can add to yours, this recipe is specifically formulated based on Mr. Valor’s specific allergies (Ms. Independence loves it too!) YEILDS 14-16 1 LTR CONTAINERS

All links are underlined and will open in new tabs.

Necessities:

  • 30 quart stock pot You can find them cheaper locally most likely. Check Big Lots and stores like it.
  • Garden Auger <- this is the link to the one that I use. No, I’m not crazy. Dog food is too dense for a hand mixer or stand mixer. Take my word for it, I learned this from experience!
  • Corded Drill I bought mine locally but paid the same. Super cheap and, with the above auger, will make dog food day a breeze!
  • Containers I bought mine in smaller quantities and ended up paying way more. They will last for MANY servings, can be washed on the top rack of the dishwasher and it’s always good to have backups on hand.
  • Most kitchens will have everything else you need. Standard pot’s and pans, Ladle, etc.

Ingredients:

  • 6 LBS GROUND TURKEY 85/15 (LINK)
  • 32 OZ LIQUID EGG WHITES (LINK)
  • 16 OZ GREAT VALUE ALL NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER (LINK) MAKE SURE IT’S SUGAR FREE!
  • 42 OZ OLD FASHIONED OATMEAL (LINK)
  • 4 CUPS RICE your choice on what kind, I use regular white rice.
  • OPTIONAL: TURKEY TAIL PROBIOTIC POWDER 1/3 OF CONTAINER (LINK)

Recipe:

  • Fill stock pot 2/3 full of water, put on high to boil
  • Brown 6 lbs of ground turkey (I use my instapot) no need to break it up. Strain and set aside
  • Once stock pot is a rolling boil, remove from heat.
  • Add rice and oatmeal, stir, cover and let stand 20-30 minutes, ok to stand for up to 2 hours.
  • In a small sauce pot, put in egg whites, just over medium heat (6 on my stovetop), cover and leave to cook approx. 10 min.
  • Remove lid from eggs, using a spoon/spatula allow any liquid still in center to reach the outside, recover and monitor.
  • Once eggs are cooked through, remove from heat.
  • Check stock pot for consistency. It can be a bit liquidy it will stiffen in the fridge.
  • Add Meat, Eggs, Peanut Butter and any optional ingredients you choose to the stock pot
  • How you choose to proceed from here is up to you, I will tell you how I do it:
  • Put a towel on a rug on the floor (rug protects your floors from the hot pot, towel protects the rug) and put the stock pot on top. Make sure you have an outlet nearby.
  • Put the Auger bit in your corded drill and plug it in NOTE: I don’t care how powerful your cordless drill is, Dog food will defeat it!
  • SLOWLY start to blend your stock pot ingredients together. If you go to fast, it will sling HOT STICKY dog food EVERYWHERE! (your dog will help with the mess but if it gets on you it will stick and burn like crazy!)
  • Make sure when blending you get around the bottom edges or you will find area’s of JUST RICE 🙂
  • Once you have achieved ideal consistency (should be close to canned loaf dog food or thick oatmeal) remove drill, unplug and carefully rinse off without getting water into the drill. Auger bit can go in dishwasher.
  • Set up an assembly line on your counter with containers and dog food, use Ladle to fill containers. Easiest when still hot, do not put on lids yet.
  • Once you have filled all containers and identified where you are going to store them (7 days worth fridge anymore should be frozen) put the lids on and put the food in chosen storage.
  • Pat yourself on the back, have a drink and celebrate that you have started your dog on the path to a longer, healthier life…..and now you have a kitchen to clean!

Optional Additions:

The following is a list of Ingredients you can choose to add to your dog’s food. Some of them I used to add and have edited out since, some I cannot add because of Doggie allergies.

  • LIVER (There is not a way that I have found to NOT make your house stink when cooking liver…maybe use an outside grill) finely chop or mash add to stock pot.
  • UNSWEETENED PUMPKIN Canned pumpkin is fine just make sure it isn’t pie fill. Needs to be plain pumpkin add to stock pot.
  • YAMS boil and mash like regular potato’s add to stock pot.
  • BOILED BONELESS SKINLESS CHICKEN can be used with or to replace ground turkey. will need to be finely shredded.
  • BEANS black or red or navy, boil till soft add to stock pot
  • CARROTS will need to be boiled until soft and finely chopped, add to stock pot.
  • POWDERED TURMERIC will add color and flavor as well as holistic health benefits. Especially good for doggies with any kind of tumor cancer.
  • MULLEIN TEA add to water while boiling, remove before adding oatmeal and rice. Mullein tea has many health benefits for dogs and humans. Great for lymph drainage, respiratory issues. Adds a nice earthy flavor.

Feeding Instructions:

We feed our kids twice a day, 7am and 7pm. We do not heat it up, it’s very difficult to get the heat even and our babies prefer it cold. Because of the size difference between Valor and Independence we divide 1 container between them 1/3 and 2/3 each feeding. You know your pets best and their needs.
